Greg Brown, Guitarist & co-founder of Cake has passed away


Greg Brown, the guitarist and who co-founded Cake, passed away. He was part of the guitarist, who contributed to the band's first two albums, including "Fashion Victim" from 1996, he passed away after "a brief illness."


Cake announced Brown’s death on social media, writing, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness.

Greg played a key role in the early creation and sound of Cake.

In 1991, Brown joined singer John McCrea, multi-instrumentalist Vince DiFiore, drummer Frank French, and bassist Shon Meckfessel to establish the Sacramento, California-based band.

One of Cake's greatest songs, "The Distance," was written entirely by him for the latter.



After Brown and bassist Victor Damiani left the group in 1997, they created Deathray with Dana Gumbiner. A few years later, Todd Roper, who was in Cake, joined on drums.

In addition to releasing the solo EP "the end of something new" in 2023, Brown worked on a few non-Weezer projects with Weezer members Rivers Cuomo and Matt Sharp. On the song "Bound Away" from their most recent album, "Showroom Of Compassion," released in 2011, he and Cake reunited.

He was loved by many who had the opportunity to meet with him and shared his presence.

No clear details was made public concernung his cause of death as more saga are still coming out.
