The Two Fall River police department has identified Nigel Vaughn, 40, as the culprit who was shot by policemen during a gunfight on Sunday morning, February 8, 2026. At the beginning of the range, two officers were wounded.
Officers were called to the 300 block of Linden Street at approximately 12:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a man with a gun sitting in a car outside a house.
A struggle broke out as Vaughn turned violent as officers tried to search him. Officers retaliated when Vaughn started shooting at them during the altercation.
Although he was shielded by his bulletproof vest, two officers were struck on the range, one in the abdomen and the other in the elbow.
The wounded officers are expected to live after being taken to the hospital. Officers helped Vaughn at the site after he was struck badly, but the hospital where he was taken declared him dead.
According to initial accounts, Vaughn was approached by police at a Linden Street gas station following allegations of careless driving and a potential physical altercation.
Fall River Police Chief Kelly Furtado commended the officers' bravery and professionalism and conveyed thankfulness that they were able to go back to their families.
The cops' names have not yet been made public.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office is still investigating the event.
