On Monday, October 13, 202, Sandy Alomar Sr., a former All-Star infielder and the father of six-time All-Star Sandy Alomar Jr. and Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar, died in Puerto Rico. He was 81.
A week before his 82nd birthday, Alomar Sr. reportedly experienced a medical crisis. But there are no specifics if that's is really cause of death.
Alomar Sr. was an All-Star with the Angels in 1970 and played parts of 15 seasons in Major League Baseball. He was an MLB coach for four teams.
Alomar had a successful fifteen-year career with seven Major League Baseball teams, including one All-Star selection. He also had a long career as a manager and coach in the minor leagues and winter leagues, as well as a spell guiding the Puerto Rican national team from 1979 to 1984. Alomar also served as a coach for the Cubs, Mets, Padres, and Rockies.
He was a good man who spent time mentoring those around him.
His sons, Sandy Alomar, Jr. and Roberto Alomar, received professional training from the Padres organization, initially with the Class-A Charleston Rainbows and then as a coach with the Padres. Together, they played 37 years of Major League baseball and amassed about 4,000 hits, making them some of the most gifted players of their generation at their position.
Sandy was a Golden Glove winner, a six-time All-Star, and a Rookie of the Year, but his career was cut short by knee issues. Roberto received twelve All-Star selections, four Silver Slugger Awards, and ten Gold Gloves.
