A dispute between an off-duty Milwaukee police officer and a 26-year-old man, later identified as Elijah Wilks, resulted in gunfire on Thursday, October 9, 2025, close to 49th and Mill Road.
Following a car fender-bender near 37 St. and W. Mill Road in the Northside of Milwaukee, Elijah Wilks, was seen on camera pistol-whipping an off-duty Milwaukee police officer.
More than four gunshots were fired at the location; it was unclear whether Elijah died there, but the footage shows that he was starving from the wounds.
According to department regulation, Milwaukee police usually make the footage available to the public within 15 days of a shooting.
Approximately four days after the shooting, this release took place. According to Milwaukee Police, the footage was made public "in the interest of transparency." The family argued that the shooting was justified and demanded that the video be made public since they think it captures all that took place.
On camera, the two exit their vehicles, have a brief conversation, and then Wilks draws his gun and strikes the officer. It takes 26 seconds to complete the swap. Police say that the two exchanged shots.
Video reveals Wilks had a gun of his own, and the officer had his duty firearm.
There are continuous arguments about who is at fault—Elijah Wilks or the off-duty Milwaukee police officer.
The investigation is still underway, and we'll share any updates as soon as they become available.
