On Thursday night, May 7, 2026, a drive-by shooting claimed the lives of 18-year-old Christ the King Jesuit College Prep student Damarion Johnson and his Uber driver, 38-year-old Jassen Cho. The shooting took place in East Garfield Park at approximately 8:27 p.m.
When they got there, Damarion was in the backseat of a white sedan with several GSWs attached to his body. After being taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, he was declared dead. After being discovered with a GSW to the arm, the Uber driver was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Jassen Cho's passing will make it the second Uber driver death in Chicago this year. For almost six months, Jassen Cho had been doing side work for Uber.
Johnson was reportedly on his way home after participating in a basketball and mentorship program called Project Swish Club when an unidentified perpetrator in a dark SUV drew up next to them and fired multiple rounds at the Uber vehicle before driving off.
An eyewitness captured exclusive footage of the fatal drive-by while the 18-year-old was traveling home in an Uber.
Days before Damarion Johnson was set to commit to a college offering a full-ride basketball scholarship, the terrible double shooting took place. In actuality, he lived out his last days doing what he loved.
