At the age of 43, Justin Woodward, a Portland chef who was formerly referred to as "the only Portland chef cooking Michelin-level food," passed away from liver failure.
Although his family has not yet issued a statement regarding the tragic news, the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
“We don’t want people to speculate about his cause of death," Woodward's sister, Rachel Ruiz, said. "We want people to know how serious alcohol can be."
The news of Justin's death broke on Tuesday afternoon, October 7, 2025.
His work at Castagna in Southeast Portland made him most famous, and he attributed this to his family for "instilling in him an enthusiasm and excitement for food." Prior to his passing, he had recently relocated to California.
He transformed Portland's Castagna into a world-class attraction and was a great artist-chef. Everyone who has received the news is shocked because nobody anticipated it.
At the moment this tragic news was posted, there wasn't much information available to the public. Any additional information verified by his family will be released right away.
Remember them.
