According to someone close to the family, Arturo Gatti Jr., the son of the late boxing champion Arturo "Thunder" Gatti, passed away at the age of 17. Authorities are describing his death as an apparent suicide after he was discovered dead in a Mexico apartment on Tuesday.
He passed away similarly to how his father was discovered dead in Brazil in 2009, sixteen years before.
Chuck Zito, a bodyguard and lifelong family friend, verified the news on social media on Wednesday: “It’s with a heavy heart that I have to say… R.I.P. to 17-year-old ARTURO GATTI JR.”
Images of the father and son side by side in what now seem like frozen moments were included in Zito's article. He offered his sympathies to the Gatti family, which included Sophia, Arturo Sr.'s mother, siblings, and daughter.
Moe Latif, Gatti Jr.'s longtime coach, also attested to the tragedy, writing: “It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone.”
Gatti Jr. was the only child of Amanda Rodrigues and Arturo Gatti, the Canadian-born boxer whose career included world titles in two weight classes and memorable bouts that earned him a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Gatti Sr. passed away in 2009 at the age of 37 for reasons that are still up for debate. Gatti Jr. discussed his goals in the sport, practicing at Jersey City's Ringside Boxing Gym, and paying tribute to his father's legacy in a 2025 interview with HudPost. He had trained at the same gym as his father.
The teen had started honing his amateur boxing skills, and boxing fans had taken notice of his potential.
Friends, family, and boxing leaders have posted sorrow messages on social media, remembering Gatti Jr. for his discipline, respect for the sport, and affiliation with one of the most well-known boxing names.
