Jaliyah Butler, 19, lost her life tragically during the homecoming weekend at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
When her companions were fighting, an 18-year-old lad chose to take a gun from his car, resulting in two gunshot wounds: one to her arm and one to her chest.
It didn't even include her. She simply happened to be in the wrong location at the wrong moment.
As police and SLED conducted their investigation, the institution canceled classes after authorities established that the event happened on or near campus on Saturday night, October 4, 2025.
On the same night, another individual was hurt in another gunshot.
Matthew Daniel McCoy, 18, was later taken into custody by authorities in relation to Butler's passing.
The college community has been rocked by the tragedy, with academics and students lamenting Butler's passing and demanding greater security at university functions.
Anyone who is not a student is not permitted on campus, and their homecoming has been canceled for safety reason.
As you might guess, her family is devastated and is fighting for justice. According to a family member, Butler and Son Funeral Home has her and will be conducting her funeral ceremonies.
Investigation is ongoing, any details learned will be made public ones they are confirmed.
