Jack DeJohnette, Drummer, Pianist, and Composer Has Died

At the age of 83, the renowned drummer, pianist, and composer Jack DeJohnette passed away. His death was first reported incoherently and without confirmation; rumors were spread and specifics were unclear. On Monday, October 27, 2025, it was confirmed that Jack really died.

In the company of his wife, family, and close friends, Jack passed away quietly at Kingston Hospital in New York.

It is impossible to overestimate Jack's impact on jazz and beyond. He added color, depth, and intelligence to his work from his earliest years in Chicago to his crucial collaborations with Miles Davis on records like Bitches Brew to his own innovative groupings and recordings.

Miles Davis, Charles Lloyd, Bill Evans, Sun Ra, Pat Metheny, Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, John Coltrane, and Freddie Hubbard are just a few of the performers DeJohnette has collaborated with over the course of his career.

Since releasing The DeJohnette Complex in 1968, he made about 50 albums as a bandleader or co-leader, frequently taking the keyboard seat again. Some of his most well-known work was created during his lengthy collaboration with ECM Records, which started in 1973.

He has won numerous Grammy Awards over the years, solidifying his reputation as a trailblazing pioneer whose inventive use of rhythm continues to influence contemporary jazz.

He was an excellent drummer and a born, instinctive musician. Every sound he generated was a combination of the street and his own inner, very unique, deliberate vision.

For everyone who had a good time with him, his passing would mean a great deal. As they go through this difficult time, remember them all in your prayers and thoughts.
