Amanda Mia Brown, Laguna Beach Missing Swimmer Found Dead

Amada Mia Brown, the 5-year-old girl who went missing after being carried away by a strong wave at Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach on Tuesday night at around 7:30 p.m., has been found dead.

According to the Orange County Sheriffs Department, onlookers were able to save the girl's mother and sibling at the time of the event, but she was nowhere to be found.

Massive waves are being brought to Southern California by a historic, long-period summer south swell formed off Antarctica—the biggest in years—when the disappearance happened. Regional beaches are under heavy surf warnings from the National Weather Service and local public safety organizations.

With breaking waves up to nine feet high along the coast, Orange and Los Angeles counties are experiencing a high surf event that is causing hazardous water conditions.

Even on relatively pleasant days, water conditions can swiftly become hazardous, as this incident offers as a sobering warning.

The United States Coast Guard, the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department, and the Orange County Sheriffs Department's Harbor Patrol were among the regional organizations that coordinated the emergency response and search activities.

Thoughts are with Amada’s family and loved ones during this terrible time.
