It wasn't until Thursday, March 12, that his remains were recognized. Investigators claim that there is now no proof of illegal behavior.
The 15-year-old first vanished after travelling into New York City from Long Island's Stony Brook School.
Just before the cameras captured a menacing splash in the East River, the 15-year-old was last seen on surveillance tape crossing the Manhattan Bridge in early January on the night he vanished. The child was never seen in the footage leaving the platform. He was last seen at that same moment.
After weeks of searching, the authorities found his remains in the ocean.
Thomas Medlin's parents found it difficult to accept stories that he might have jumped from the Manhattan Bridge when they first appeared a few weeks ago. He gave no indications that such a thing may occur. His family is still shocked that his body was found in the river, wondering what could have motivated him to commit such an atrocity.
The community continues to provide space for individuals who are experiencing the unbearable agony of losing a child.
They can now start the process of paying tribute to him and putting him to rest.
Since detectives are still looking into the entire matter, it is currently unknown what would have caused him to act in this way.
